Last year I wrote my 40 Before 40 list and one of the activities I put on there was to learn how to stand up paddle board. I’ve seen lots of pictures on Instagram and Pinterest of people doing this and I really wanted to have a go.
We stayed at Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa, on our trip to Oahu, Hawaii and the resort was set around a little lagoon, with lots of different water-sports available, and paddle boarding was one of them. I knew I wanted to have a go, but, I’m a total introvert and was not happy about the thought of A) me failing at being able to stand up on the board and B) everyone seeing me fail, so I decided to spend the first few days lying on my sun lounger surreptitiously watching others to see how well they did at this paddle boarding lark and to see if I could learn how to do it by watching them. Well, they all looked like pros which made me even more nervous that I would be totally hopeless!
Eventually I plucked up the courage to have a go and I headed out onto the lagoon with Mark and Abby (Harry had a migraine so he had gone back to the room to sleep). I started off kneeling and paddling so that I could move away from all the swimmers. It was quite ‘bumpy’ further out in the lagoon, one of the instructors said that this was due to it being windy and that earlier in the day they had had to stop the boarding for a while because of this. The bumpiness was ok but I have this silly fear of falling in so it made me a bit nervous to stand up.
Abby mastered it straight away and was soon whizzing around the lagoon like a pro. A few of her friends joined us and they started showing off and doing handstands on their boards! I decided it was time to get brave and stand up and I did it and didn’t fall in – woohoo! We had borrowed my sister-in-law’s GoPro (we don’t have our own one) and Mark was videoing us out in the lagoon. It was our first time using the GoPro so the video isn’t the best, but you can see it on our YouTube Channel.
I’m so pleased that I built up the courage to get out of my comfort zone and have a go at stand up paddle boarding. I enjoyed every minute of it and will definitely give it another go in the future!
